Design Issue:
At tanglin halt, there is a high concentration of elderlies. despite once moving into the place with their children, they now live alone as the children move out
Design Solution:
To introduce intergenerational housing that can encourage interaction across generations
Design strategies:
- design communal spaces that brings the youth and the elderly together though common grounds
- capture the architectural language of tanglin halt: enclosure, horizontality

Adapting forms from site
I adapted 2 forms from the site, the green corridor, which is a stretch between 2 slab blocks that is transformed into a communal garden space.
The second is the courtyard, an enclosure of 4 slab blocks that is transformed into an exercise area and or any activity spaces.
These 2 can be seen adapted in the massings below, following the idea of creating an overall building structure that encloses spaces, and adjacent slabs that create a green corridor.

Concept
Was to create a living space that could foster relationships between and across generations. This was created on the basis on a few elements. Creating spaces that promoted; good health, good learning, good relationships and independance. These for elements come together to provide opportunities of people of all ages to participate and hopefully forge relationships.
Good health, meant creating spaces that promote a healthier living. This included playgrounds and exercise areas. Good learning led to the creation of study corners and sharing spaces such that events could be held there. Good relationships spawned communal dining spaces. Finally independance was allowed in the privacy of their own flats.
Unit efficiency 75%
Unit efficiency is commonly used by developers to ensure that the building remains profitable. A high unit efficiency meant that there was more square area that can be sold vs square area that can't be sold. For example the units can be sold but the corridors cannot.
However, this can also be used to create better opportunities for people across generations to interact. For example we see that in every level I have allocated 1 4BHK minimally. This meant that there will at least be 1 household that has a full size family. I have paired the big unit with the smallest 1 BHK to allow would be singles and or couples staying in it to interact with a big family. In the block across i placed the 2 BHK as they have the potential of being a family or just a couple.
